Four Seasons
CENTRAL EUROPE DANCE THEATER | MACIEJ KUŹMIŃSKI
Maciej Kuźmiński's Four Seasons is a celebration of life depicted in a caleidoscope of images, unraveling in a mesmerizing and complex dance composition. Created for the company of seven dancers of Central European Dance Theater, the oldest dance theater in Hungary, the work brings on stage the most characteristic elements of Kuźmiński's choreographic style, together with new endeavors into re-intepreting Folk tradition. In it's ever-morphing structure, danced to the music of Steve Reich, Four Seasons weave Nature and Culture, re-birth and return, becoming a wider metaphor for life as flux.
In Four Seasons Kuźmiński focuses on the cyclical, ongoing nature of life, taking a wide, philisophic perspective on the human existence.
The narrative of the work is centered around a life span of a community, with each season representing a different period in life. First, in Spring, we see naked life, raw, nameless, only just forming. Second comes Summer, when individuals become a social body, growing into cultural heritage and forming new relationships based on love and joy. The Autumn represents a long period of maturity, with people immersed in the time itself, experiencing days and years passing by, with labour as an inescapable constituent of human existence. In the fourth Season, Winter, movement comes to stillness. It's the season of relfection, looking back, saying goodbye. Kuźmiński ends the journey with the return of Spring in the form of Goddess of Life and Fate (reference to Slavic goddess Żywia). There, in the place between the worlds, souls merge to form a new beginning.
Thus, Four Seasons becomes an epic journey, a meditation of fate, and a celebration of life. With movement language ranging from contemporary dance, through a remix of Hungarian Folk, to the author style of the choreographer, Kuźmiński stages one of his most ambitious and challenging works to date - relentlessly performed by the joung ensemble of Central Europe Dance Theater.
Four Seasons marks a new direction in Maciej Kuźmiński's work. What the choreographer calls the intricate morphing structures is a venture into structured and complex compositional body of work. Each section of the piece is woven into another section, creating an unending flow of images, that morph into a one stage experience.
Four Seasons takes this into a scale never before explored by Kuźmiński, offering the most complex work that he has ever created.
